History and Origin

Halloween or Hallowe'en ("Saint's Evening") is considered rooted in Christian beliefs and practices. The English word "Halloween" is derived from "All Hallows 'Eve", a Christian holiday that celebrates All Hallows' Day (All Saints' Day) on November 1st and All Souls' Day on November 2nd. It's the eve of Day. From the time of the early Church, the major Christian festivals (Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, etc.), as well as the feast of All Saints' Day, have had vigils from the night before. Collectively known as Allhallowtide, this three-day period is when Western Christians honor all saints and pray for recently deceased souls who have not yet reached Heaven. Commemoration of all saints and martyrs was held by several churches on different dates, mainly in the spring.
