Huw Edwards, a familiar face on British television screens, has announced his resignation from the BBC after serving as the main presenter of the flagship nightly news program, News At Ten, for the past two decades. The 61-year-old journalist, born in Bridgend and raised in Llangennech, Carmarthenshire, joined the BBC as a trainee in 1984.
During his four-decade tenure at the corporation, Edwards anchored coverage of significant national events, including the late Queen's funeral in 2022 and the coronation of the King in May 2023.
His resignation comes after reports emerged last July alleging that he paid a young individual for sexually explicit images. Despite no police action being taken against him due to a lack of evidence of criminal behavior, Edwards has been off-air since the allegations surfaced. The BBC has accepted his resignation, stating it believes the decision will allow all parties to move forward.
Throughout the ordeal, Edwards' wife, Vicky Flind, publicly acknowledged his struggles with serious mental health issues and his need for inpatient hospital care. Despite the controversy, Edwards has not made any public statements addressing the allegations against him.
The BBC has apologized to the parents of the young person who made the initial complaint, admitting it should have acted more swiftly. Police investigations found no evidence of criminal behavior, but a subsequent Newsnight investigation alleged that Edwards was also involved in sharing inappropriate messages with present and former BBC staff.
